About

Senthorun (Sen) Raj is an advocate and researcher with a passion for social justice. Sen's thesis, 'Moving Representations', examined the relationship between sexuality, persecution, emotion and refugee law in Australia. His thesis was awarded the University of Sydney Medal and the Australian Lesbian & Gay Archives Thesis Prize.

Sen is a research associate with the Faculty of Law at UTS on an international study of gender identity-based refugee claims.

In 2008-09 Sen completed a Summer Research Fellowship at the Australian National University on a project titled 'Just Joking' exploring homophobia, racism and hate speech.

As an advocate, Sen works as the Senior Policy Advisor for the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (NSW). In a governance role, he serves as the NSW Branch President of Amnesty International Australia and a Board Director of ACON Health.

Sen writes regularly for The Sydney Morning Herald, Online Opinion, New Matilda, Sydney Star Observer, and The Punch on sexuality and politics. He has also published papers on lesbian sadomasochism, intimacy and citizenship, sexuality and refugee law, gay male domestic violence and racist humour.

Sen is also the managing editor of Men and Feminism, a website aimed at bringing feminist theory and politics into broader public culture conversations.
