About
Karl has taught at the University of Cambridge, The Open University, Keele University, the University of Wollongong, and the University of Sydney. He is the founding author of Legitimation Code Theory (LCT).
LCT builds on and integrates the insights of, among others, Basil Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu. It is a framework for analysing the activities of understanding social fields of practice, including knowledge and education. LCT is now being used as a key theoretical framework for research in sociology, linguistics, education, design studies, nursing, indigenous studies, philosophy, biology and physics, and by scholars in Australia, South Africa, Ireland, France, China, Taiwan, the UK, Norway, Spain, and other countries.
