About
I am an independent writer and researcher in sociology and cultural studies, located in Sydney, and an Honorary Associate, Department of Sociology and Social Policy and the Biopolitics of Science Network at the University of Sydney. Prior to this I was Professor of Sociology and Cultural Studies at Charles Sturt University, Australia.
My latest books are 'Medicine as Culture: Illness, Disease and the Body, 3rd edition' (Sage, London, 2012) and 'Fat' (in press, Shortcuts series, Routledge, London). I am currently working on a project looking at mothers' conceptions of their young children's health and embodiment, and have been writing articles on theoretical aspects of infant and child embodiment. I have also become interested in writing about the ways in which new social media and digital mobile devices are affecting ways of promoting health and experiencing embodiment. Another project which I am working on is investigating the emotional dimensions of motherhood and the mother-child relationship, including the emotional labour of caring work and mothers' role in helping children learn about emotional management. I am also soon to start work on revisions for a second edition of my book 'Risk' for Routledge, part of their Key Ideas in Sociology series.
