Faculty Member, Gender and Cultural Studies
Associate Professor
School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry
About
I worked at the Universities of Melbourne and Adelaide before joining the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney in 2003.
RESEARCH
I've published numerous essays on cultural theory, girls and girl culture, modernity, popular culture and popular genres, and rural studies. My books include: Girls: Feminine Adolescence in Popular Culture and Cultural Theory (Columbia UP, 2002); Modernist Cultural Studies (UP Florida, 2010); Teen Film: A Critical Introduction (Berg, 2011); and The Australian Country Girl: History, Image, Experience (Ashgate, forthcoming).
My current research projects focus on Australian country towns (a current ARC-funded discovery project), on cultural studies' debt to pragmatism and phenomenology, on the intersection of fan culture and online culture, and some further work on girl studies, on teen film, and on gender and modernity.
TEACHING
I supervise at Honours, Masters, and PhD level. I'm particularly interested in supervising projects that focus on one or more of the following areas: modernity and modernism; cultural theory; popular culture and popular genres; online culture, especially fan cultures and gaming; rural studies, especially with a focus on youth; girlhood and girl culture.
Undergraduate units: Introducing Cultural Studies; Youth Cultures: Images and Ideas of Youth; Cultural Theory; Genres in Cultural Context.
Postgraduate units: Modernism, Modernity and Modern Culture; Key Thinkers for Cultural Studies.
